A young boy and girl, Otto and Mathilde are introduced playing hide and seek in the forest. Otto pulls out a book with his given name on it that he had bought from a gypsy. The book is about an anxious and desperate king awaiting the birth of his first child. "the king's eldest would inherit the kingdom, but only if the child was a son. If the firstborn was a daughter, the monarchy would some daypass to the king's younger brother, his most ardent rival." The queen gave birth to a girl which was whisked away by the king. "Moments after the birth, he whisked the infant away and ordered the loyal midwife to take it deep into the forest and leave it for the animals. He forbade the midwife to speak of it ever again." The kindhearted midwife went to the woods and took care of the infant and gave her to a witch. Over the span of 4 years to more daughters were born. The midwife did the same with the first and brought them to the witch. The witch named then Eins, Zwei, and Drie translated to One, Two, and Three.
